Friday evening's event, cosponsored the Yale Chapter of Amnesty International and Local Chapter #1, will be the launch of a new nationwide campaign for Amnesty called "Denounce Torture!" Speakers include U.S. Congressman John Conyers, an outspoken advocate for the dignity of all human beings; Mark Danner, writer for the New Yorker and one of the leading authorities on torture; and Barbara Olshansky, senior attorney with the Center for Constitutional Rights, an organization which has taken a leading role in representing Guantanamo detainees and uncovering the truth about illegal and inhumane policies.

Wednesday, April 6, 2005 - Table for the YHHAP Fast!

The Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project (YHHAP) needs your help for one of the most important social justice events of the semester! The YHHAP Fast will occur Thursday, April 7, and it is essential that there be enthusiastic individuals spreading the word about it in their dining halls during the next two weeks.

The success of the Fast depends on you! If you can help by volunteering 1-2 hours to table during lunch (11:30-1:30) and/or dinner (5-7) from now until Wednesday, April 6, please e-mail your availability to amy.wojnarwsky@yale.edu by this Wednesday at 11:59 p.m.

The Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project presents a panel of homeless and formerly homeless guests from Harmony Place who will be present to tell their own stories and answer questions. Harmony Place is a community center in downtown New Haven that is cooperatively staffed by the homeless, Yale students, and community members. Tea and cookies will be served. Amanat is the Chairperson of the South Asian Democratic Leadership Commission, as well as the former chairperson of South Asians for Kerry, a trustee of the DNC, and the founder of the first nationwide cable television station for Muslims.
