Official active members of the Yale College Democrats may vote in the upcoming elections, to take place on Monday, December 3 in the Branford College Common room.
Dartmouth is in New Hampshire, so they get to have a debate. We have to settle for an (incredibly fun) watch party. At least we have a better football team.
You don't matter (politically) unless you vote, and you can't vote (legally) unless you register, and many Yale students wouldn't register (unfortunately) if the Dems didn't go door-to-door. So basically, we're doing this so that Yale matters. So it's pretty important. Meet in the Branford Common Room.
Meet with Dems Campaign Coordinator Ben Shaffer in the Berkeley Bagel Bar to find out how you can help DeStefano get re-elected.
Is there something you've just been dying to ask one of the Democrats running for president? Well, we can't help you with that, but on October 1, we are having a forum featuring representatives from the campaigns, and we need people to plan how it's going to work, what questions are going to be asked, how they're going to be asked, and whatever else you and Issues Coordinator Abby McCartney think needs to be planned. The only thing the Yale College Democrats endorse in primaries is a well-informed electorate.
Meet with Dems Treasurer Geoff Buller to learn about the fundraising activities we'll be doing this semester.
Come meet, hear, and talk to New Haven Mayor John DeStefano at our weekly meeting in the Branford College common room.
After Monday's meeting, you will think to yourself, "That Eric Kafka guy is really cool. I want to spend more time with him." Well, do we have good news for you. You can!!!!!! To be held in Berkeley H31
Come get to know the Dems and hear about all the great stuff we're doing this semester
In lieu of a regular Monday meeting, the Dems are going to see the candidates for Ward 22 aldermanic election debate the issues important to Ward 22 voters. All four candidates will be there: Greg Morehead (endorsed by the Yale College Democrats), Cordelia Thorpe, Lisa Hopkins, and Reggie Lytle. Come hear what they all have to say!
On Wednesday, the Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut, one of the statewide organizations we're working with, is organizing a lobbying day for universal health care in Connecticut, and we're getting a group of people to go up there. If you are interested in going, email Matthew Ellison and/or Abby McCartney.
The special election for Ward 22 alderman is on Monday, April 16. Ward 22 includes Stiles, Morse, Swing Space, and TD, so that means Yale students can vote. The voter registration mail-in deadline is April 2, so this week is key for registering voters. And we have two opportunities to do that this week -- Monday and Wednesday --, so take advantage of them to help register voters and to register yourself if you live in Ward 22!
There's a special election in April for Ward 22 alderman. Ward 22 includes Stiles, Morse, Swing Space, and TD, so that means Yale students can vote. But they need to be registered. That's where we come in.
If you had a great time collecting signatures on campus and want more, this is the activity for you! Also, if you want to practice your Spanish, this is the perfect opportunity, as Fair Haven is largely Hispanic. If interested, e-mail Ben Shaffer.
Discuss ways to make positive change in New Haven with students from around the area. This Saturday, the group will decide which initiative to pursue (options include early childhood education, health, immigration, and clean energy). Tom Swan, executive director of Connecticut Citizen Action Group and Ned Lamont's former campaign manager, will be speaking. For more information, email Ted Fertik or Berry Kennedy.
Hear from a newly elected Congressman from Connecticut's 5th District (the northwestern part of the state), who is an up-and-coming progressive leader. To be held in LC 102.
Want to get to know your fellow Yale Dems in a less formal setting? Join us for a party in Saybrook B21.
Hear about all the great things Democrats are doing in Connecticut from the chairwoman herself. To be held in the Branford Common room.
If you had a great time collecting signatures on campus and want more, this is the activity for you! Also, if you want to practice your Spanish, this is the perfect opportunity, as Fair Haven is largely Hispanic. If interested, e-mail Ben Shaffer.
Remember that meeting where we talked about Iraq? Well now we're actually doing something! Come Saturday to learn more about what you can do! To be held in the Branford Common Room.
New Haven Action is a nonprofit organization that gives students opportunities to get involved in New Haven politics. Wednesday's event is $10, and there's free food (or it's free admission, and you are required to spend $10 on food, however you want to look at it). RSVP to Rebecca Livengood.
Come learn about an organization that pushes for progressive action in the Hispanic community and in New Haven and Connecticut government as a whole.
Help prepare the program's presentation. To be held in the Calhoun Fellows Lounge.
The candidate filing period for the Ward 1 Democratic Committee's aldermanic endorsement ends Friday, February 16 at 5:00 p.m. If you are interested in running, please e-mail the Committee co-chairs Cynthia Okechukwu and Hugh Baran, or click here for more information.
A discussion of the major issue of health care, including what the legislative options are and what we can do in CT. To be held in the Branford Common room.
Do you want to go to Viva's on Thursday? Do you want to hang out with Eric Kafka? Then this is pretty much the event for you.
Want to engage the next generation of New Haven leaders? Thanks to the High School Political Engagement Project (HPEP, for short), you can! Go to Thursday's meeting in the Calhoun Common Room, and then go to Viva's!
If you were at last week's meeting and want to do more because it was awesome, or if you want to get involved now for the first time because I just told you it was awesome, go to the EITC lobbying meeting and see how you can get involved in the EITC lobbying campaign! Will be held in the Saybrook Common Room.
